ghetto girls

hear it in the stairwell:Howie Day
A good summary of my weekend can be found in the fact that since Friday morning, I’ve only enjoyed 9 hours of sleep. And these 9 hours weren’t consecutive- I slept in 3 separate 3 hour increments in 3 different days. And 2 of these 3 sleep sessions weren’t even in my bed. I’m going to trademark the term “anti-sleep”. This takes place when you fall sleep but wake up right as you enter into that deep, satisfying, rejuvenating sleep...right at the three hour mark. And upon waking you feel much more zombied and horrible than before your head graces the pillow.
My small group girls and I retreated to Cincy this weekend to enjoy Erica’s UC ghetto apartment, home-cooking, ear wax candles, the GAP outlet, Dewey’s Pizza, Urban Outfitters and Coldstone. It was such a great time of renewal and fun with some of the most amazing Christian girls I know. I then worked Saturday night and, of course, was at APEX Sunday morning. Michelle and I made a mandatory stop at Starbucks for liquid caffeine between a.m. church and Gospel Mission. Yes, our small group is volunteering there once a month to serve the Sunday meal. The organization serves two meals for the homeless and/or needy every Sunday- one for kids and one for adults. The great things is that before eating everyone has to sit in on a church service during which the gospel message is presented. 6 small groupers showed yesterday and I will never cease to be amazed by how those who serve together grow together. Matt Nelms is one mean jello scooper, Mattlevi took us all to lunch lady land and Michelle became the dessert nazi. It’s so great serve in a practical way.
I crashed on Michelle’s couch Sunday evening for my last anti-sleep session as she rambled sweet Spanish nothings in her characteristic Speedy Gonzales paced conversation with her Mexican fiancé.
Needless to say that after another full “day” of work last night I had nothing even resembling an intelligent thought to offer in Microbiology this morning. I kept nodding off into my microscope eyepieces and my lab partner, Jimmy, convinced me that it was red mold growing on my throat culture. When I returned home hoping to grab something to eat before absolutely crashing (for a semi-anti-sleep 5 hours before small group) I find green fungi (much like I had just studied in lab) growing on both my bread and my provalone cheese. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to the grocery store. I’m not sure when I last brushed my teeth. I can’t even remember what it feels like to sleep without fighting sunlight. But I honestly love the challenge:) Carpe Diem. I’m off to Carpe Bed.
