hear it in the stairwell: All 80's All the Time
I was on my way to the video store tonight and I discovered a new radio station, 89.7- All 80's all the time. So I spent the 3 minute drive singing and car dancing to Cindi Lauper. I opened an account at the store, rented LOTR 2 and got back into my 80's music on wheels. When I turned the key "Tainted Love" was blaring and as I pounded on my steering wheel drum kit and sang along, my "Tainted Love" memory came to mind...
My freshman year in highschool my friend Jason asked me to go to his senior Homecoming-he went to a different highschool than I did. So we went and "doubled" with our good friend Tim Witham and his date. Their highschool was a very small, farm town school and did things a little differently. Tim was voted Homecoming King but their school didn't elect a Queen-just a King. So when the Homecoming Court dance was announced and the music began to play (as I recall it was the music from the Titanic, ha), Tim had a bright idea. Tim, decked out in his purple zoot suit (for whatever reason they were popular then:)), walked over to the DJ booth, whispered something in the DJ's ear then sauntered out into the middle of the dance floor-alone. The Titanic theme song screechs to a halt and Tainted Love begins to play. I'll never forget the image of Tim dancing his heart out to Tainted Love completely alone in the middle of the dance floor with crowds of people circled around him clapping-classic.
