hear it in the stairwell: david grey
I was eating dinner this evening at the only spot on our dinner table that has a view of the t.v.- I was watching the evening news to catch some uplifting weather reports. The weather man came on the screen in front of a really great sunset view of the dayton skyline and immediately I remembered that I have that same great sunset view from our attic. I abandon my dinner, bound up the steps, into the attic and kneel in front of the one very low window. The view from there was even better than the one displayed on channel 2 news. From our house, the sunsets directly behind the city and from our house the city is centered in view of the attic window, out on the horizon. I think I need to put a couch or a overstuffed chair in front of that window and make it a habit to sit there often.
I just started reading Orthodoxy by Chesterton. An amazing book that deserves to be read more than a few times. Out of all of the amazing material presented in the book, one simple truth has stuck with me. Everytime I feel like I'm growing closer to God because I've discovered something new and amazing about His character or because I feel myself discovering His will, it is always because I'm "discovering" scriptual and Godly truths that have already been discovered by the Apostles thousands of years ago and by Godly men and women every day since. It is amazing to me that the very same Word that is directing me and becoming real in my life is the same God and the same Bible that have been made real in people's lives for years on end. I often feel novel or learned when I've grasped a new subject with God and then I look around or even look back at Christ's followers and see that this has all been done. This sounds a bit discouraging but IT ISN'T- it gives me encouragement that I'm not diving into the lives of Christians who are more mature than I am and I'm not learning all I can from their experiences and their walks with God. I can't even fathom all their is to know about God and His character and I obviously know I'm not going to get to it in my life...what a better resource than the lives or Christians who have gone before me! The Apostle's Creed rocks.
